QR Codes!

Hey everyone! The first thing I imagine many of you are thinking after the reading the title of this post is ‘what is a QR Code?’

Well, a QR Code is basically a bar code, except made of squares instead of lines, which can be scanned by a smart phone. After it has been scanned it can perform a variety of tasks depending on the information which it has programmed into it. For example, it might create a contact on the user’s phone complete with a name, phone number and e-mail address; it might play a music video or film trailer; or, in the case of the code you can see below, it will take the user to a web address.

My code has been designed to take users to my Netcars blog and was designed by illustrator and animator Tom Rides. This post is essentially a shout out to him and his awesome work, which you can find examples of on the following sites:

Be sure to check out his work and contact him if you’d like a QR Code for your own site!

Lest We Forget

Welcome, everyone, to a far more reflective blog post than is usual for me. As you are all no doubt aware, today marks Armistice Day; the day ninety three years ago when a peace treaty was signed which marked the end of the First World War. Over the years this date has come to symbolise far more than the sacrifices of 1914 – 1918; it is now a day of remembrance which recognises every man and woman who has fought for their country, including those who are still doing so today. The most poignant symbol of this day is, of course, the poppy.

It has come to my attention that the number of people wearing poppies has declined dramatically this year, no doubt due to the obvious ‘offence’ which it has caused to certain groups and lobbyists. In my opinion, this is outrageous; the poppy should not be thought of as a political tool used by oppressive governments, but rather as a social one marking a period of reflection, reverence, gratitude and sentiment. Still, in spite of this controversy it was refreshing to see when I awoke this morning so many people supporting the cause through other means, using status updates, tweets and messages to demonstrate the significance of this date. These people have already given their own tokens of thanks for all those who have given so much for the rest of us, so I felt it was high time that my own tribute to the unrecognised and unnamed heroes of generations past and present be written too.

To those who fought through the trenches; the beaches; the bocage; the desert; the mountains; the fields; the towns; the cities. To those who fought on land; on the water; in the sky. To those who fought for freedom; and for those who were forced to fight against it. God bless them for all which they have endured and for all which has been sacrificed on our behalf.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Back on Track!

Hello all! I thought I should update this blog again since it lost its way a little after the first two entries. I thought it was nice that my request to Tyrese’s people for information on his album received a reply (several replies, in fact); I thought it might encourage more people to visit the blog. Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy his films, all it did was transform (pardon the inherent pun) my page into a Tyrese fan site. Oh dear.
So, in my efforts to get back on track I thought I should talk about what I’ve been up to. Mainly I’ve been writing more blog posts for www.netcars.com, which you can find here –

I’ve also been doing a little bit of commissioned work for www.whatculture.com, a blog about films, television and video games. It’s good fun; be sure to check out my first entry here –

Aside from that I’ve also been doing some more work on my ____. I’ve called it a ____ because if I called it an ‘extended essay’ it’d sound boring and if I called it a ‘book’ it’d sound a lot more refined than it currently is. Long story short, I wrote my dissertation about the role of the 1st Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment during the Normandy Landings of 1944. Seeing as there was very little written about it already - three books at most dedicated to the subject and small references in only a couple of others - most of my research came from studying documents in the Bury St. Edmunds Record Office. After finishing uni I got it into my head that I’d do more to expand on this topic, following the Battalion from Dunkirk to Germany, although I’m now just about realising how much work that’s going to be. Still, it’ll no doubt keep me occupied and may well produce an interesting read by the end, so I might as well give it a shot. I may well update my progress on here from time to time, so if you’re interested to see how I’m getting on you know where to look!

Another Tyrese Update!

Hi all! I received yet another e-mail recently from Tyrese, this time discussing not only his album ‘Open Invitation’ but also his new single ‘Too Easy’ featuring Ludacris. Tyrese had this to say:

“Ladies and gents, I am now days away from the most important album of my career.  I've read the tweets, Facebook posts, Myspace, emails, letters and, more importantly, I've ran into the fans and supporters in person all wanting me to do it again.  I'm here!!  This album was done from the heart. I will go on record and tell you that this is the BEST R&B album by far.  I took my time and left it all on the mic.

Just wanted to send a sincere thank you for all the love and energy you are helping to create around this album.

PS…I just heard a major record label executive said, "Tyrese will NOT sell records as an independent artist and at best only "Black People" will buy Open Invitation."  His name is M. Sutton…Of course, this started some sh*t...

The iTunes link works internationally; the PRE-Orders are beyond important!! The physical album will be sold at all Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target stores nationally as well as Momma and pop stores...

God bless you…Embrace and Enjoy!”
